Minutes
A copy of the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting having been distributed to all present, it was agreed that they be taken as read. A copy was signed by the Chairman.
Secretary's Report
The secretary reported that, following the purchase of three boards and sets, the Association now possessed eight boards and sets and two clocks for use in county matches and other events. It was intended eventually to purchase a further six clocks so that sufficient equipment would always be available for county matches.
In September 1999 the Cornwall Chess web site went online. This had been designed with the aim of providing up to date information and other content on chess in the county. Initial feedback was good and the secretary welcomed any suggestions of other materials that might be of interest to the members.
The secretary also informed the meeting that a special match was in the process of being arranged for 2001/02 to celebrate the centenary of matches between Cornwall and Devon.
Treasurer's Report
The treasurer presented the accounts for the 1999/2000 season. These are appended at the foot hereof. The accounts were approved.
League Secretary's Report
The league secretary reported that the County Shield had been won by Truro A with Camborne 2nd. The relegated clubs were Liskeard and Truro B. Penwith B were division 2 champions. Newquay obtained the second promotion place by defeating Penwith B in the re-played match.
The A. W. Busby Cup was won by Camborne who defeated St Austell in the final. The final of the Under 115 trophy was to be arranged between Truro and Liskeard.
Match Captain's Report
The match captain reported that Cornwall had reached the national stage of the County Championship for he first time ever, defeating Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset in the WECU section before losing to Leicestershire.
Junior Secretaries' Report
The junior secretaries reported on the year's activities, the competition winners being listed below. Phil Manton said that, owing to pressure of work, he would not be standing for re-election. He would, however, continue to assist and organise some of the junior events.
Postal Secretary's Report
In the Sinclair Trophy Cornwall obtained 14 points out of 26, finishing 7th out of 17 counties.
Results of Competitions
Motions
1) The treasurer proposed that from 2000/01 teams in division 1 of the league should consist of 5 players. This was defeated.
2) The treasurer proposed that from 2000/01 matches in the A. W. Busby Cup and Under 115 Trophy should be played on specified dates to be determined by the league secretary. This was approved.
3) The secretary proposed that the full draws for the A. W. Busby Cup and Under 115 Trophy should be carried out at the Secretaries' Meeting prior to the start of the season. This was approved.
4) The treasurer proposed that games in the Holding Shield (Summer League) should be graded for the rapidplay list. This was approved.
5) Jeremy Menadue proposed that from 2001 the Emigrant and Falmouth Cups should be contested over five rounds. The members voted 8 - 8 and accordingly the motion failed.
6) The match captain proposed that from 2000/01 drivers providing transport to county matches should receive the sum of £2 per person carried. This was approved.
Election of Officers
Finance
It was agreed that 6 clocks should be purchased for use in county matches and other events. The secretary undertook to do this and to be responsible for the safekeeping of the equipment.
The treasurer proposed that the board fee for league matches should be remain increased from 70p to 90p. This was approved
Any other business
Robin Kneebone requested that, in view of the distances to be travelled and in view of the number of juniors involved, clubs should make greater efforts to ensure that matches were started on time. It was agreed that this would be desirable.
The secretary announced that the Secretaries' Meeting would be held at Truro School on Thursday 6th July at 7.30 p.m.
