CORNWALL COUNTY CHESS ASSOCIATION

Under 18 Championship 2001

This year's event, organised by Robin Kneebone, was held at St Uny School, Carbis Bay on 10th and 11th February. As well as the Cornwall Under 18 Championship there was a "stars-barred" quickplay on the Saturday, won by Laurence Weatherly of St Uny school with 5½/6 (20 entries)

There were 12 entries for the championship and the field contained all the strongest eligible players including the defending champion. As usual in this event, it was clear that the title meant a lot to the players and the combination of competitive spirit and sportsmanship on display made it a most enjoyable one to control.

In the end the event was won with a score of 5½/6 by Douglas Cooke of Liskeard. Although he made sure of the title with a round to spare by winning his first five games, the success did not come easily as the games section will confirm. In his final attempt to win the title, Grant Lakeland (St Austell) was runner-up with 5/6, his only loss being to Douglas in round 3. The return of Edward Webb (St Austell) after a period away from the game was most welcome; his good win in the ending against the defending champion is given in the games section.

An encouraging feature of the event was the participation of 5 primary school players. The winner of the under 11 prize was Nicky Collier (St Uny) with 5½/6, a ½-point ahead of the favourite for this prize, Jeremy Kneebone (St Uny) Congratulations, therefore, to Douglas who now holds the trophy for the year to come.
