Annual Congress 2014
Played on 31st January to 2nd February 2014 at Stithians Centre
Final Standings

This year's congress was held once again at the Stithians Centre. There was a slight increase in the entry for the Emigrant and Falmouth Cups while the Penwith Cup, revived after a two-year gap, attracted an entry of 14, mainly junior, players. The organisation and controlling were in the capable hands of Robin Kneebone, allowing Ian George to play in the Emigrant for the first time since 1998.

Emigrant Cup

Defending champion, Mark Watkins, and 13 year old Theo Slade won their first 3 games to go a point clear of the field. Their round 4 encounter produced a careful draw with neither player forcing an opportunity to establish a clear advantage. The final round started with both on 3½ but with the the tie-breaks likely to favour Mark, it was clear that Theo needed to win his last round game to become county champion. In the event Mark's game finished first, with a win against David Saqui, while Theo drew a long, tough game against Grant Healey. Theo's play in this tournament and rate of improvement indicate it will not be long before he becomes county champion

Two other players produced noteworthy performances. In finishing third with 3½ Grant Healey achieved his best ever score in the Emigrant, winning 3 games with his typically belligerent style of play. 2002 champion, James Hooker, continued his successful return to active play with 3 wins. The culminating move of his winning combination against David Saqui (although it must be classified as something of a swindle since David had had a winning advantage for some time) was worth the entry fee alone.

Falmouth Cup

As is customary in the Falmouth Cup a large number of players were in contention for the top places to the very end. At the beginning of the final round there were 7 players on 4 or 3½ with a tie for first place the most likely outcome. The key game was between Marcus Pilling and last year's winner, Ian Renshaw, both on 3. Marcus played the risky Morra Gambit against the Sicilian and reaped the reward of his enterprise and willingness to take a risk in pursuit of the prize. As the other games all produced the desired result for Marcus he finished alone in first place on 4 and wins the trophy which his late father, Ian, won in 1983.

Two players who began the tournament well down the field in grading order had excellent tournaments. By winning his last 3 games Richard Humpleby finished second equal with 3 others a ½-point behind the winner while Jan Rodrigo scored 3.

Penwith Cup

The Penwith Cup was held as a one-day rapidplay event on the Saturday for players graded 85 or under or who have never had a grade. 14 played, including 10 juniors.

The outcome was a triumph for the Richings family from Marazion. Kenton won the cup with a near-perfect score of 5½ while his 10 year old son, Harvey, who beat two adult players and who will be a force in years to come, came 2nd with 4½. A number of junior players achieved good performances, notably William Dash (Richard Lander school and Cameron Murdoch (Truro School).
